Who is Eligible
All students in grades 6-12 in San Diego & Orange County and all dependents in grades 6-12 of active duty military personnel (all branches) based in the Southwest Region.
Subject Matter:
All aspects of Marine Corps Aviation, both past and present.
Eligibility & Requirements:
One entry per student. Each entry must be original in concept, design and execution and must not violate US copyright laws. The title and inspiration for your piece must be attached to your artwork. All entries must be signed by the artist on the front of your artwork. Submit all entries in jpeg or tif file thru the website at www.flyingleathernecks.org.
Finalists will be contacted and must have a release form signed by a parent or Guardian.
Two Dimensional Only: no sculptures
Mediums Accepted: include colored pencils, pastels, charcoal, watercolors, mixed media, oils, acrylics. Oils & Acrylics must be painted on canvas board or canvas paper mounted on a stiff backing such as masonite (No photographic or computer generated art.)
Size: All entries must be completed in a 11x14 format

ESSAY CONTEST
"HONOR, COURAGE AND COMMITMENT"
Theme:
- Which notable American, past or present, inspires you with their honor, courage and /or commitment?
- Why do you admire that person?
- How can you emulate their values in your life?
Length:
- Up to 600 words (grades 6-8)
- Up to 1000 words (grades 9-12)
Student winners in each category (grades 6-8 and 9-12) will receive the following awards:
- First Place $300
- Second Place $200
- Third Place $100
Deadline for Submission: Friday March 14, 2025
Judging: Knowledge of theme, creativity, originality, and clarity. Students can write about all three values or just one or two of the values in their essays.
Sponsors: Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation and the Character Education Resource Center' at the University of San Diego.
