Athletic Director's Message
To the Parents, Students and Alumni of Foothill High School,
The Athletic Department, knows the value of Foothill's Athletic experience in your child's life and we are happy to play a part in it! Approximately 1220 out of 2380 of our student body are involved in athletics and join the rich tradition that started in 1964 and has produced many great men and women in the past fifty years. Being a part of the Century Conference adds to the thrill and excitement in each of our 25 sports. This is the one of the toughest leagues from top to bottom in the CIF Southern Section. Throughout the years we have had many league, CIF and individual championships. Visit our Athletic Records page on our website for a listing of our champion Knights.
Fall sports (Boys & Girls Cross Country, Football, Girls Golf, Girls Tennis, Girls Volleyball and Boys Water Polo ) practice and compete from mid-August to mid November. Winter Sports (Boys & Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Soccer, Girls Water Polo and Boys & Girls Wrestling) practice and compete from mid November to mid February. Spring Sports (Baseball, Boys Golf, Boys & Girls Lacrosse, Softball, Boys & Girls Swimming, Boys Tennis, Boys and Girls Track and Boys Volleyball) practice and compete from mid February to mid May.
It is a great day to be a KNIGHT!

All returning and incoming athletes (including Cheer and Dance team members) must have completed the Athletic Clearance process before they can participate in any summer and/or school-year sports activities.
The Athletic Clearance is valid for one year and must be repeated on an annual basis. Failure to renew the Athletic Clearance prior to summer will result in the student not being able to participate in any summer and/or school-year activities at Foothill. Participation is only allowed after the Athletic Clearance has been approved by Vince Namba or Dan Shell (Athletic Directors).
All students must process their Athletic Clearance online at: www.AthleticClearance.com
Select: Foothill/Santa Ana (CIF-SS)
Select the correct year.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR ONLINE ATHLETIC CLEARANCE
Read the Code of Conduct
Please read the TUSD Code of Conduct carefully!
Get your Physical Done
Physicals must be on file before a student will be allowed to go out for a sport. A current physical is required for each school year and is valid for one calendar year from the date it was signed by the doctor. All medical information will be kept confidential according to HIPPA regulations.
Please download and print the Physical Form below and take it to your personal physician.
PHYSICAL FORM
If you have trouble uploading the completed physical to www.AthleticClearance.com, contact Vince Namba or Dan Shell.
**Do not give the Physical Form to the coach**
If you have any questions, please contact the Foothill Athletic Department at 714-730-7464 ext. 86624.
Take your Concussion Test
Not all sports require a concussion test. Your coach will tell you to take the test if it is required.
If you have any questions regarding the test, please contact Katarina Ramirez
at Kramirez@tustin.k12.ca.us
Freshman How-To
Welcome to the Class of 2028! This page will help you get started on your journey. Welcome to all of our Freshmen! And remember, once a Knight, Always a Knight!
Here are few things that will help you get started:
CLICK HERE TO FOR THE FRESHMAN 'HOW TO GET INTO 6TH PERIOD ATHLETICS' SHEET
1. Fill out this interest survey - Use this link for the Google Form. This will NOT automatically enroll you in a sport & is no way an obligation on your part. This will allow head coaches to create an email blast of information about their summer programs & next steps for athletes. Each sport is a little different.
2. Physicals - You will need a current physical to participate. You can get the physical form by following this link. Physicals will need to be updated annually. To participate in summer programs, you will at a minimum need to have scheduled a physical with your physician.
3. Register on AthleticClearance.com - This link will redirect you to our page about registering, concussion testing & our code of conduct. ALL ATHLETES & PROSPECTIVE ATHLETES will need to do this prior to tryouts, summer or their seasons. IF YOU HAVE NOT REGISTERED, YOU MAY BE UNENROLLED FROM YOUR SPORT.
4. Contact the head coach for more information - Use this link for a list of coaches & websites (click on the sport name to go to their website). The head coaches will have the most updated information regarding their practices, tryouts, etc.
5. Summer programs (This page is currently being updated & will be live soon) - Many sports offer summer programs; some do not. Contact the head coach for information on their summer plan. You can visit the Summer 2024 page for more information. SUMMER PROGRAMS ARE NOT MANDATORY, but do offer coaches the ability to both work with you and assess your skills. PARTICIPATION IN SUMMER IS NOT MANDATORY TO TRY OUT for a sport; but again, many of the skills that will be evaluated will have been part of the summer program. Coaches will work with all students that have financial restrictions - your economic state will not keep you from participating in summer.
6. Tryouts - This is our page for tryouts, but is often out-of-date. We will try to keep this updated, & coaches will try to put tryouts in the announcements. The best way to have the most current information is to contact the head coach. (above)
7. P.E./Athletics Class - Most sports are offered year-round during the school year. Sports will take the place of your mandatory (two-year) P.E. requirement. Enrollment in a sport/P.E. class is up to the head coaches. In mid-July, coaches are asked for their fall rosters. These rosters will be used to create the Athletics class. You can ask your counselor or ADs, but ultimately both will contact the coach for approval. So the best bet is to contact the head coach (above) to see what they need from you. Each sport is a little different.
PROCESS FOR GETTING YOUR SPORT ON YOUR SCHEDULE (School Year):
It is a two-step process:
1st: Contact the coach. The coach will be asked if you should be in the program (it may consist of a simple 'ok' from the coach, or may require a tryout). Once the coach gives your name to the ADs, you will be in 6TH PERIOD ATHLETICS ONLY. It is not the same as being on the official roster/roll sheet.
2nd: Complete your athletic clearance (athleticclearance.com) registration AND submit a completed physical. If your name appears on the coach's roll sheet, you are complete and in the 6th Period Sport Class!
Other questions? Click here to send an email to Vince Namba (AD).
Code of Conduct
TUSTIN UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
REGULATION 5131.6
STUDENTS
Elementary and Secondary Code of Conduct for Co-Curricular and Extra-Curricular Participation
Each high school takes a vital interest in co-curricular and extra-curricular participation in athletics, student council, band, orchestra, cheerleading, drama, dance team, choral groups, and clubs by promoting fair discipline as well as responsible standards for behavior, dress, and grooming. It is recognized that these regulations are necessary to maintain team/club/group morale, individual discipline and effective learning. Participation in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities is a privilege, not a right, and may be revoked by the principal/designee whenever a student violates this regulation. This Administrative Regulation is the expression of the minimum standard for the code of conduct of participants in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. As such, an individual school site, activity, or program is not prohibited from establishing a higher standard of conduct as long as the participant in the activity is aware of, and consented to, that higher standard as a requirement for participation. Tustin Unified School District co-curricular and extra-curricular student participants must be good citizens. As defined in this Administrative Regulation, “participant” means a student who has either enrolled or attended at least one meeting of a student club or activity.
Citizenship
1. Student participation in activities requires good citizenship. Any student who verbally or through gestures, communicates profanity to an opponent, official, or fans will be evaluated for disciplinary action
2. Infractions involving hazing or other serious violations of the Education Code can carry a penalty of suspension from the activity and restricted participation in school activities. The principal/designee(s) will review the infractions. The response to the incident may include, but is not limited to the following:
a. First Offense—Suspension for 1 to 10 days of participation
b. Second Offense—Suspension from 1 to 15 days of participation
c. Third Offense—Suspension from the activity for up to one year
3. Infractions of a less serious nature may result in a student being suspended from an activity directly by the coach/teacher/advisor. If a coach/teacher/advisor suspends a participant for more than one day, the coach/teacher/advisor must contact the principal/athletic director/activities director/designee as well as the student’s parents.
4. Discipline problems arising within the domain of the activity and/or contest are to be handled at the coach’s/teacher’s/advisor’s discretion. Parents/guardians/caregivers will be informed at the earliest time possible.
Alcohol/Narcotics
Any student in the Tustin Unified School District who possesses, uses, transports, or is under the influence of any controlled substance, alcoholic beverage, intoxicant of any kind, or who possesses or sells any drug paraphernalia shall be subject to suspension and/or expulsion from the school and activity. Any student who sells or provides a controlled substance or intoxicant of any kind shall immediately be suspended and shall be recommended for expulsion. The above provisions apply to related school activities, or attendance at such activities, which occur at any time, including, but not limited to any of the following:
While on school grounds
While going to or coming home from school
During lunch period on or off campus
During or while going to or coming from a school sponsored activity
Any student who violates the District’s Drug and Alcohol Policy shall be ineligible to represent their school in competition or performances (in athletics, activities, or performing arts) for ten consecutive calendar weeks from the date of the infraction, excluding summer break (recess). The ramifications for violation of this code of conduct policy do not preclude the ability of the school site or District to impose discipline, including involuntary transfer, suspension, or expulsion.
Participant Dismissal and Abandonment
1. A participant dismissed from any team will be removed from the appropriate cocurricular/extra-curricular class.
2. Abandonment of any activity precludes the participant from participating in another activity for the period of time the abandoned activity is in season. A participant “abandons” an activity when the participant departs without the knowledge or permission of the coach/teacher/advisor.
Scholastic Eligibility (6-12)
1. District Policy 6145
a. In order to be eligible for co-curricular or extra-curricular activities, a student shall maintain a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) during the preceding grading period.
b. A student who does not maintain a 2.0 GPA shall be placed on probation for the following grading period, the student shall continue to be eligible, providing he/she maintains a satisfactory attendance (three hours a week) in a designated tutorial class.
c. If the student does not maintain satisfactory attendance in the tutorial class, he/she will be declared ineligible. If at the end of the probationary grading period the student has not achieved a 2.0 GPA, he/she shall be ineligible for the following grading period.
d. Two or more “U’s” in citizenship from two or more separate teachers will result in a student being ineligible for co-curricular or extra-curricular activities for the remainder of that grading period.
Equipment and Financial Obligations
1. Each participant is responsible for the use and care of the equipment issued to him/her.
2. Any participant who does not return or pay for all school equipment issued to him/her immediately at the close of each sport season or activity will not be issued any further equipment and will not be allowed to report to another activity until the debt is cleared.
3. Each student participant is responsible for the Transportation Fee at the beginning of each season of activity.
Security Procedures for Personal Property
1. It is highly recommended that the utmost care be taken in securing student equipment and personal articles. The school does not assume responsibility for the loss of items.
General Athletic Information
1. Participants must be in attendance for at least four periods the day of the contest. Unexcused absences may result in a one-day suspension from participation in the activity. Failure to attend four classes will subject the student to a one-contest suspension on that day. There is an expectation that participants will not have any unexcused absences from school on the day of the event or activity.
2. Contest:
a. The appointed coach will be in charge of the team before, during, and after the athletic contest.
b. Game time and location shall be arranged so that participants miss a minimum amount of their class work. It is the responsibility of each participant to make up all missed assignments.
3. Overflow Class:
a. After the season is complete, participants may be placed in the Overflow Class (“0” period) or a regular physical education class to fulfill the physical education requirement.
4. Transportation:
a. The usual means of transportation to athletic contests is by school bus. Occasionally other means of transportation will be authorized, but only when specifically approved in advance.
b. All participants must travel to contests by school bus or other authorized transportation. Participants arriving at contests by other means will be denied the privilege of participation.
c. All students participating in field trips or competitive events shall return with the group unless released by the coach, using a verified signature log, to the student’s parents/guardians/caregivers. (See TUSD Regulation 6174.)
California Interscholastic Federation—Southern Section (“CIF”) – Code of Ethics
The CIF Southern Section publishes a “Code of Ethics for Athletes” and each year that is part of its constitution and bylaws (Blue Book). The current CIF Code of Ethics for Athletes is incorporated by reference into this Administrative Regulation.

Winter Sports: Boys/Girls Basketball, Boys/Girls Soccer, Boys/Girls Wrestling, Girls Water Polo
Spring Sports: Baseball, Softball, Boys/Girls Lacrosse, Boys/Girls Track, Boys/Girls Swimming, Boys Tennis, Boys Golf, Boys Volleyball
ATHLETIC CLEARANCE MUST BE COMPLETED THE YEAR OF PARTICIPATION PRIOR TO BEING ENROLLED IN A SPORT. ATHLETIC PHYSICALS MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO TRYING OUT FOR A SPORT.
Cross Country, Swimming & Track generally do not cut, but do have a tryout period because of the high volume of participants. We had to turn people away this year. The remainder of the sports hold tryouts, in some instances on two different occasions. The majority of programs have conducted tryouts at the end of the spring season, or during summer. These tryouts are generally held early in an effort to make sure students are placed into 6th period P.E. classes prior to registration. Should an athlete be added after the beginning of school, their schedules will switch.
The majority of programs run year-round programs, which means a student can be in that sport's 6th period class for the entire year. Not all do, however. Check with the coaches, or call the athletic office to check for more information on that.
For those students in 6th period classes, they should remember that practices - which fall into the 6th period P.E. category - are just that, class. Attendance is mandatory, for practices, games & fundraising activities that might be scheduled by the coach.
